Rotterdam Port Authority 2012 Annual Report

28.05.2013

WITH VISION TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The port of Antwerp had a fairly good year in 2012. In this Annual Report you can now read about the efforts and achievements by the Port Authority along with its partners in the port community in keeping the port competitively strong. Ongoing investment, collaboration and strengthening the social links, all in a sustainable way: these were the key concepts in 2012.

Further investments were made and the Port Authority committed additional people and resources on various fronts, while the collaboration at port-wide level was confirmed and intensified. Witness the General Assembly of the port community, devoted to accessibility within a context of sustainability.

Further attention to further developing local support was another main area. The fact that local people are interested and indeed involved in the port is demonstrated by the more than 100,000 visitors to the MAS Port Pavilion and the runaway success of the bus tours of the port. Here too the emphasis is on sustainability. Indeed, sustainability has become a constant concern not only for the Port Authority but also for the general port community.

Annual Report

In addition to the business information and the financial statements, this year the report is divided into four main sections: Maritime Services, Port, Foreland & Hinterland, and Employment & Social Setting. Each of the four sections starts with an introduction presenting the vision and context.

1. Maritime access. The significant and lasting economic results produced by the third round of deepening of the Scheldt are what stand out here. Along with this the Port Authority continues to invest in efficient shipping traffic management and sustainable services.

2. In a leading international port such as Antwerp, future-oriented infrastructure is a must and has to be further developed. In the “Port” chapter we look at this subject in greater detail, and also pay attention to the different service and security aspects. This chapter concludes with the efforts to make sure this is all done in a sustainable way.

3. In the “Foreland & Hinterland” section we look at the multimodal possibilities in the port of Antwerp. What are the advantages of Antwerp, what does it concentrate on, and what can be done better? With the report on the activities of Port of Antwerp International and APEC, readers find out more about the links between Antwerp and the rest of the world.

4. Finally there is the section dealing with “Employment & Social Setting.”  Or to put it another way, people and the port. For the Port Authority itself, the main focus of attention in 2012 was on security. For local people, 2012 was the year in which they were able to discover Antwerp as an international port, a service provider and a source of economic growth.
