The Port of Algeciras container terminals handled 4.1-million TEUs in 2012 (+13%).
Total Throughput reached 89-million tonnes, an 8% increase over the previous year. In absolute values, the items that have witnessed the biggest growth are coal, steel, building and food products
This record year has also closed with great results in the area of Traffic in the Strait, where passenger, vehicle and HGV traffic figures have grown. Passenger embarkation figures have returned to usual past levels, with 4.8-million customers (+7%), whereas HGV (RO-RO) Traffic has broken through the 240,000-unit barrier for the first time (+7%), transporting cargoes from one shore to the other on the Strait of Gibraltar.
Liquid Bulks returned 22.7-million tonnes (-1%), Solid Bulks returned 2-million tonnes (+25%) and General Cargo came to 58-million tonnes (+12%).
Finally, bunker operators at the Port of Algeciras Bay supplied 2.9-million tonnes of fuel to ships in 2012.
